Nanocrystalline Toroidal Cores And Ribbons

Nano crystalline cores are Iron Based cores which is a specially developed soft magnetic material with low magneto striction, high permeability (150000), saturation flux density of 1.25t and working temperature of 120 degrees celcius and above. These materials are available in widths of 5mm to 40 mm in steps of 5 mm and thickness varying from 20 microns to 30 microns.

Major manufacturers of nano crystalline raw material are Hitachi Metals (japan) and Vacuum schmelze (Germany).

Because of its properties nano crystalline is slowly finding applications in GFI (Ground fault indicator) toroidal cores. And HMA (High Metering Accuracy) toroidal cores.

They are widely replacing Mu metal cores (NI FE) cores mainly because of its lower cost as compared to widely fluctuating Nickel prices.

Nano crystalline cores are very brittle and sensitive after annealing. Hence there is a need to encapsulate these cores by stainless steel casing or press board casing to avoid any changes in electrical values after winding, resin casting etc.

What is Nano Crystalline Steel ?

Nano crystalline ribbons are fruit of complex engineering techniques. It is a suitable alloy made with sophisticated metallurgy followed by rapid quenching with metal spinning technology having cooling Rate of more than 1 million Degree / hour.

Why is Nano Crystalline steel better than CRGO ?

Basically Nano steel is having excellent B-H properties at frequencies of 15 to 25 KHZ .When this material is used at 50 KHZ the B-H value that you get are almost 25 % of the best values of CRGO material.

Comparison of Nano Crystalline Steel with Mu metal :-

1. Nano crystalline steel saturates at 1.25 Tesla against 0.77 Tesla in case of mu metal. So designer has to take this into consideration.
2. Mu metal price is almost 400 % that of Nano crystalline steel.

Electrical Benefits over CRGO :-


As per std IS2705 (part 2) & Relevant IEC standards Nano crystalline steel toroidal cores are very effective for Current transformers to achieve the values of 0.2S class which is the most precision measuring std. Ratio error / Phase angle error / ISF values from 120 % to 1 % can be achieved in the case of Nano Instrument Transformer cores as for 0.2S Class as briefly explain in the Table below :-
